And chances are that it will be, as Greece has become a passive leader in the free wifi world by quietly following the wave of this popular trend. 

By 2010, Greece can boast of having over 400 municipal free wifi access spots, seemingly countless hotspot locations offered by cafe-bars and hotels, as well as several grassroots wireless community networks across the country.

The case of free wifi in Greece is an interesting story, and a quietly succesfull one in many respects  But perhaps this should not come across as too much of a surprise.

For one thing, tourism is an important economic sector for Greece. As such, the merits of an added value service such as free wi-fi internet access in this industry are clearly visible. This is why, hotels in Greece, like in many other places, were amongst the first to adopt wifi access as a service to their customers.

Given national, intranational and global economic recession, as well as the relatively high price involved in enjoying a coffee in Greece (!), it seems that the merits of free wifi have steadily made themselves evident in the "cafe" market as well.

In most large Greek cities, it seems that roughly 1 out of 3 or 4 cafes will offer free wifi. And, alongside hotels, Greece has lot's of cafes and bars!

The idea that a "cafe culture" could foster in a culturaly rich tourist destination bathed in sunshine and great food is not at all surprising. Likewise, free wifi internet access seems to have made itself right at home in modern Greek society and culture. The mediterannean hot-blooded hosts who shun the sunshine for the shade and claim to honor the best things in life, like getting together with friends/family for (maybe a little too much) food and drink, discussing and meeting new people, believe that the best things in life are free, or at least they should be pretty darn close to it!

 So alongside free education and free healthcare, free wifi seems to easily fit in to the modern Greek cultural sprectrum.
